Valid points made here. The wife and I have started keeping some cash stashed in a handy spot just in case. I can't imagine the power system going down and not being able to access cash via an ATM or debit card. What a mess?!

Great points about our vulnerability.

In emergency situations, it's a good idea for people at home to have a hard wired phone line and a corded phone. If power goes out, you don't want to be dependent on a cordless phone base that runs from AC. Who knows whether cell phones will be operative, especially if towers go down. Besides, just when you want to use it, your battery may go down.

Having a battery powered weather radio is a good idea, too. The radio's batteries may not be as fickle as those of a cell phone.

If you have a police scanner or other radio you can program to 146-148 MHz., you can listen to weather spotter nets from local ham radio operators, who often do an excellent job of coverage.
