Although I'm in favor of guns for self-protection, I think that after a disaster they'll be of limited use. If you're in a bad city neighborhood and they know you have a stockpile of food, you'll be outnumbered and outgunned anyway.
The best bet is to live in a small rural community, but that's so unhip these days!
And your advice assumes people even have debit cards. In my old day job I had to give an emergency check to a Katrina refugee because, although her welfare check went direct deposit, her financial institution was a small credit union underwater in downtown New Orleans. If she'd had an account in a large bank, and a debit card, she would have had cash available anywhere in country (except New Orleans of course).

Good post. Who wants to make a canoe out of bark or leather when we've got so many made from modern materials?

Yes, we might find ourselves doing things like Abraham Lincoln, but he didn’t have plastics, fiberglass, LED lights, and other such things we have today. Which is a nice way in saying they own you.

Good post. Furthermore, once you depend on the government you have become a refugee.
