We’ve all heard about ComicCon, DragonCon and all the other “Cons” or conventions for enthusiasts of all types. Now we finally have our very own emergency preparedness convention aimed at Survivalists and I must say – it’s about time! The prepping industry has really taken off over the past several years thanks to shows like Doomsday Preppers and Doomsday Bunkers which have really helped to bring emergency preparedness to the mainstream.
Gone are the days when people who choose to be responsible for their own survival by stocking up on food storage and survival gear are ostracized as being paranoid conspiracy theorists. Now we have people from all walks of life coming into the survival scene and proudly stepping up to take their well-being into their own hands, rather than depending on the government to come save us.
This is an exciting trend and it’s encouraging to see so many people starting to really think about their preparations for survival in times of crisis or emergency. With the prepper mentality really starting to gain traction around the world, it’s only appropriate that we finally have a Prepper Convention to explore all of the various aspects of survivalism. Off the grid living, homesteading, self-defense, food and water storage are just a few of the vast range of interests that encompass the prepper world.
Considering that Utah is a mecca for emergency preparedness due to the high percentages of Mormons in the state, what better place for PrepperCon to host their first event? Since the Mormon church strongly encourages their members to prepare for future disasters by storing food and water, the survivalist movement had a strong foothold in the state long before it began to gain traction across the nation.
PrepperCon boasts some interesting attractions such as the zombie apocalypse costume contest, capitalizing on the recent zombie infatuation due to shows like The Walking Dead. There will also be two former cast members of the show at the event to attract Walking Dead fans and we all know there are plenty of us out there! Some of the events advertised on the PrepperCon website include training and demonstrations on the following topics:
Homesteading
Urban Gardening
Survival Gear
First Aid
Hunting and Fishing
Off Grid Living
Outdoor Equipment
PrepperCon will be held April 24-25, 2015 at Utah’s South Town Expo Center
