1. Razor Wire

Barbed wire works great for cattle, but nothing intimidates like razor wire. Just the thought of getting snagged could be enough to deter most. For the full intimidation effect, It works especially well around your primary gates and entrances.

2. Signage

While a sign won’t stop a determined trespasser, it will deter most of “opportunists” from entering. Going onto a well marked property versus going onto an empty dirt road are two very different things for the would be criminal/vandal.

3. Barricade Bars

Give structure entrances a little extra protection with a steel barricade bar. Nobody will be kicking in your doors with these on.

4. Driveway Alarms

Know when you have “company” before they get to your front door. Knowing beforehand could make all the difference.

5. Motion Sensor Lights

Just like some of the other deterrents on this list, motion sensor lights let bad guys know that this property is occupied. They will have to be really motivated or stupid to ignore lights like this.

6. Dogs

Dogs are one of the best possible ways to deter intrusion. They offer several benefits such as, the ability to physically match and intimidate intruders, senses that aren’t vulnerable like electronics, intuition (helps discern the intruders intent) and last but not least, they are on guard day or night.

Can’t accommodate a dog into your life? Try the electronic equivalent, the watchdog alarm system.

7. Automated Turret

Having an automated turret changes the security game around. You’ll have intruders and predatory animals running for cover with one of these guarding your property. For those who are handy (and living in an apocalyptic world) , the paintball gun could easily be replaced with a real one.

8. Automatic Timers

I know what you’re thinking, who hasn’t thought of using automatic timers before. It sounds played out, but there is still validity to the use of timers in security setups. Like we’ve said previously, most rural property crimes are based out of opportunity. Don’t let them think no one is home, even for short trips away from the house.

9. Security Cameras

It used to be that cameras were too expensive to be a practical security solution. However, todays’ security cameras are much more affordable than they used to be, and more sophisticated to boot.

If real cameras won’t work for your situation, dummy cameras can help serve as a deterrent in tandem with your signs and fencing. Make sure to place these in plain view locations that are not easily accessible.

However, have you ever thought about how you’d survive the extreme initial stages of a disaster, such as:

• Riots
• Looters
• Mass Attacks
• Hostage Crisis
• Other threats caused by civil unrest

Now many of you might think this is overkill. That’s fine.

But I’m of the mindset that you NEVER know when an attack is about to happen and in what form it will come.

Sept. 11 was a good example of that. So was Katrina. And look at all the demonstrations that are happening these days? It doesn’t take much for these things to turn ugly…FAST!

So here are 3 of the “weirder” survival items most people don’t think about carrying, that I feel you should have on you at all times:

1. Mini-Prybar

The number of uses for a pry-bar are endless.
The model I carry is the“Exhumer 8″ from Dead On Tools.

If you’re on the run or bugging out, you can use it for breaching obstacles, gaining entrance to a door or even getting out of a trapped car.

I have mine wrapped in 550 paracord and it’s a beast of a self dense tool as both ends are brutally sharp and will seriously jack someone up!

2. Universal Handcuff Key

As controversial as it may seem to some, you want to be able to escape from handcuffs if you need to.
There are plastic keys now that fit nearly all (or all) handcuffs universally and take up no room at all.

I use the one from Magna Light and I’ve sewn my pants tag partially closed so it creates a snug pocket to hide this key.

If you’re ever handcuffed behind your back (as in say a home invasion, hostage situation, etc.), you can easily get the key and unlock yourself or hand it off to someone else to unlock you.

3. Security Officer’s Badge

The thing about thugs is that they know that the stakes are much higher if they attack a police officer.

Now, I’m not saying to impersonate an officer, but let’s say you get trapped in a riot as a result of a demonstration that went horribly wrong.

Assuming that police aren’t the target of the demonstrators, having a badge that looks like an officer’s badge could ward off attackers who think you’re just another easy mark as they rampage through the area.

You just take out the badge and tell them to “Back off! Just go your way and I’ll go mine and neither of us need to make this an issue. Got it?” and then back out to safety as you assume their agreement.

There’s a bunch of other stuff you should carry as well.

In fact, I actually carry 29 URBAN SURVIVAL RESPONSE ITEMS on me at all times!

These are all items you would use for survival or during an “escape & evasion” scenario where you were targeted or caught up in a violent attack, (such as in a riot or looting as a result of natural disaster, etc.)

Now you’d think that 29 survival items would make you look like you’re loaded up for a trip up Mt. Everest, right?

But actually, no one would ever know you’re carrying this stuff!

All of the items fit in a small survival bag (that’s only 7″ x 8.5″) that I keep on me, either in a laptop case that I’d normally carry anyway, on my person, or in my “map case bag” from my military days.

It’s literally almost like having a Batman Utility Belt on you at all times!

You can decide what works best for you, but I’d personally feel naked without these survival items. The confidence you’ll have knowing that you’re prepared for anything is a real comfort in today’s world.

1. Winchester Model 70 (pre-1964)

It was not even an original design. The Model 70 was an improvement of Winchester’s Model 54, which in turn was based on the Mauser Model 98. But upon its birth in 1936, it kindled a love affair that has never died. Winchester advertised it as “the rifleman’s rifle,-¿ and the slogan stuck. This was the big-game rifle by which all others were measured, and it is still, in my opinion, the best factory bolt action ever made.

The gun borrowed the best features from both the Mauser 98 and the Model 54. It retained the Mauser’s massive extractor and controlled-feed system but utilized a cone-shaped breech like the Model 54′s, which guided cartridges into the chamber even if they weren’t perfectly aligned. In place of the Mauser’s slow, jarring firing-pin fall, the Model 70′s was very fast and smooth. The trigger was the best ever designed for a hunting rifle, period-”a three-piece miracle of simplicity that gave an excellent pull, would never fail, and once adjusted was adjusted forever.

But the Model 70 has had a rocky road. Pre-”World War II examples were fine, but after the war quality steadily declined, and the ones turned out before the old model’s demise in 1963 were shoddy indeed. Winchester’s then-president decreed that it must die because it was too costly to produce.

In 1964, Winchester announced a new Model 70 that was cheaper and basically a good gun, but it was big-time, serious Ugly. Shooters beheld it and were outraged. Their fury did not abate until 1994, when Winchester reintroduced the traditional design under the name Model 70 Classic.

Many of the original Model 70s are now collector’s pieces, particularly in the scarcer calibers, and some people will pay very fancy prices for them. Its luster remains undimmed. Never before and probably never again will we see such a combination of accuracy, reliability, grace, and mystique.

I have been searching the internet for some time to find the Bear Grylls Pants with the black re-enforced knees, brush guards and re-enforced seat. I recently purchased a pair and I cant say enough about them. I love them! They have taken some serious abuse, from 10 days of climbing the whites, to rock climbing, Kayaking and every day camping, Bear Grylls Pants handle abuse and show no signs of wear. I had a really hard time finding these so I thought I would make it easier for everyone else.

So..What Pants Does Bear Grylls Wear?

Bear Grylls pants are some of the toughest outdoor clothing that I have ever worn. They have re-enforced knees, ankles and seat. They also boast sun protection and the perfect amount of pockets.

If I could design a pair of trousers for traveling, hiking, climbing, and kayaking then these would be the result. They are great. Bear Grylls pants are really comfy and made of a light weight material yet they are super rugged and hold up to just about any abuse you can throw at them. The seat and knees are made of a reinforced stretch material that adds even more comfort to these pants. They are by far my favorite pair of outdoor pants

I recently took these kayaking and dunked my kayak ( I know.. I know amateur move) but much to my surprise they did not weigh me down at all in the water, they were really comfy to swim in. Once I got back in my yak they dried in about 15 minutes. They were comfy when they were wet and did not chaff me anywhere.

In terms of price, the Gerber Gator Machete with its gator grip seems to be either a fantastic deal, or a rip-off. For less than $30 you can buy the machete and have it shipped to your doorstep. Various home improvement stores carry similar tools for roughly the same price-but with fewer features. So is the machete from Gerber under-priced or overpriced?

It’s important to note that Gerber isn’t new to the world of knives. The company was founded in 1939, by a blacksmith named David Murphy and an advertising agent named Joseph Gerber. For over 70 years, Gerber has remained an innovator in knives, creating state-of-the-art blades and handles. In fact, during the Vietnam Conflict, Gerber sold knives directly to American soldiers.

Sprinkler Safe

When it comes to hiding things, this can be done in many different ways. Camouflage or concealment are the most common ways to hide something and in more sophisticated situations cryptography can be used to hide the content of a message. Hiding money is also common but sometimes can lead to very large problems when discovered (or if you forget where your money is hidden). Rather than the old standard under-the-doormat or inside a plastic rock, this fake inground sprinkler head offers a good place to put a set of spare keys or maybe an emergency USB flash drive.
