Tactical Tomahawk

SOG tactical tomahawk

The tactical tomahawk, made by SOG, is an amazing twist on the traditional tomahawk. Based off the US army tactical tomahawk which was used in Vietnam, this beast of a tool can be used for excavation, extraction, hammering, chopping, breaching operations, obstacle removal, and much more.  Boasting a fiberglass reinforced nylon handle, durable 420 stainless steel and a strong side hammer for pounding, the tactical tomahawk is worth far more than it’s retail cost.

Tactical Tomahawk Closeup

  • A 420 stainless steel head with 2.75-inch edge
  • Side hammer checkering for precise placement when pounding
  • A steel ferrule for additional strength
  • A durable ballistic polymer handle

The digging spike on the end saved my life, (or at least a broken leg.)
I was climbing high up on a mountain in washington, and the snow was very deep. At one point, the snow beneath my feet collapsed, and I took a twenty foot tumble down the slope. I came to a stop at the edge of a small cliff, (about 30 feet) and my entire left foot with snowshoe had been buried in the snow that fell with me, and it WAS STUCK.
I seriously was hanging over the edge by my leg which was canted at an angle that is not recommended.

With a 40 pound pack on my back, I couldn't reach up to dig my foot out. Sooo, I took out the trusty tomahawk, (which I keep in a loop on my thigh) and used the edge to cut the straps off of my pack to ditch the extra weight, I was then able to reach the buried leg with the digging spike. a couple of minutes later I had dug myself out, and saved my leg, (wich I failed to mention was in serious danger of being bent at such an angle as to break at any moment.)

I cannot recommend it enough. Seriously, Thank you the people at SOG.

I bought 2 and gave one to my brother for his birthday. My brother is a retired Phoenix Fire Fighter (32 Years) and told me it was the best short axe he has ever seen. I am a professional knife sharpener and I am truly impressed with the quality of the cutting edge. It came very sharp an I have no problem sharpening it to keep a perfect edge. The weight and balance are excellent along with the quality of workmanship, Great job SOG.

I also bought two, I gave one to my buddy and kept one for myself. It has found it's way into the trunk of my car and has been used more frequently than I expected to use a tomahawk. I understand why the Shawnee in this area carried them daily (hundreds of years ago). very versatile tool, good edge, nice weight for chopping and hammering, and will definitely shatter a window and puncture a tire. I am going to buy one for my 8 year old so he can pass his hatchet down to his little brother (reuse and recycle, that's what I always say). Hope for the best, plan for the worst!
