You sum up more very salient points in one page, than most 'survival experts' do in a chapter or two of a book.
Only additions I would offer - not disagreements, mind you, just thoughts - are that caliber selection for a handgun should be a caliber that can be managed by the least strong adult in the family. IOW, if you can handle a 454 Casull or 44 mag all day, but your 90 pound wife or your Dad with arthritic wrists can't possibly use it, then if something happens to you, they are screwed. But even if you feel that for yourself, a .38 or a 9mm is too light, if your teenaged girl and your wife can make center mass hits with it at 20 feet, that might be the way to go.
Second thought - for a totally last ditch 'around the house' defense better than pepper spray ( but ONLY useful in serious threat situations) is a simple, cheap can of wasp and hornet spray. Thin, hard stream reaching out at least ten feet, directed into eyes, nose, mouth, will cause rapid blindness ( possibly permanent) as well as choking and swelling of throat and nasal membranes, plus burns facial skin painfully in seconds. Available anywhere, no license needed, and ready for use with no prep and no training.
Keep up the great work.

Late to the party, only just encountered your blog, but even though late, I had to say that this is an exceptional piece of writing, and one of the most comprehensive, all inclusive articles I've encountered. Apologies for any earlier adverse comments, because I expected more from an Australian blog.

However, your advice about firearms is a bit too limited. Choice of firearms does that require we think about the local environment. I live in a relatively small Midwest city and I feel that my 357 revolver, my SKS, my Mauser, and my shotgun are adequate for what I am likely to face in an extreme situation.

All in all, a well rounded piece of info. I agree with everything but one point. The Ak-47. It does not perform well for hunting. If you must have a semi auto rifle or something close, I would go to a website dedicated to hunting and read up on some different rifles and not just local websites but national websites. Or use whatever search engine you like and look for semi auto hunting rifles. You will find something more effective.

This was an excellent peice!

I agree with everything but one point. The Ak-47.
