Everybody should take survival gear with them at all times. I do - and this can be something as simple as a LED light on a keyring, a dinky Swiss Army knife, and a butane lighter. But the most important part of survival is between your ears. Learn survival skills, practice them at home, and make them the basis of your Ten Essentials. The gear is important, but knowing how to use it outranks the survival kit. And Le Loup has it right - any outing starts with a note before hand telling someone where you're going and when you'll be back.

5,6,9, and 10 I can go along with, but the rest? I guess it depends on what level you are at.
Number one, tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return!
And go learn some primitive skills!
Le loup.
