{"id":2051,"date":"2010-05-20T12:55:59","date_gmt":"2010-05-20T19:55:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.survival-spot.com\/survival-blog\/?p=2051"},"modified":"2012-12-10T17:57:53","modified_gmt":"2012-12-11T00:57:53","slug":"10-fast-facts-about-declining-world-oil-supply","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.survival-spot.com\/survival-blog\/10-fast-facts-about-declining-world-oil-supply\/","title":{"rendered":"10 Fast Facts About Declining World Oil supply"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You\u2019ve heard of <strong>peak oil theory<\/strong> and have a vague idea of what it is, and you know much of the <strong>world  economy<\/strong> runs on oil, but how specific is your knowledge?\u00a0 If  you invest in <strong>individual oil stocks\/trusts<\/strong> as I do,  you\u2019ll want to know as much as you can about the oil industry.\u00a0 Since  I\u2019ve been reading <strong>Jeff Rubin<\/strong>\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1400068509?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=survspot0e-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1400068509\"><em>Why  Your World Is About To Get A Whole Lot Smaller<\/em><\/a> (2009) (read my  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.getmoneyenergy.com\/2009\/07\/why-your-world-is-about-to-get-a-whole-lot-smaller-jeff-rubin-review\/\"><strong>review  of Jeff Rubin<\/strong><\/a> here), I\u2019ve been clarifying a few of the  vague notions I had before. \u00a0 And if there\u2019s anything one can say about  Rubin, it\u2019s that he gets his message across <strong>loud<\/strong> and <em>clear<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>For those not familiar with Jeff Rubin, he used to be the top  economist at <span style=\"color: #000000;\">CIBC World Markets<\/span>.\u00a0 He\u2019s since left that  position to go out on his own \u2013 which he can do, now that he\u2019s one of  the most consulted experts on world energy.\u00a0 He predicted the huge  run-up in oil prices back in 2000, and is a major proponent of Hubbert  and Campbell\u2019s <strong>peak oil theory<\/strong> (the words \u201cproponent\u201d  and \u201ctheory\u201d are arguably inappropriate here, since \u201cpeak oil\u201d is hardly  in the same speculative box as quantons or dark matter \u2013 it\u2019s much  easier to verify\/falsify).\u00a0 The following facts come straight from  Rubin\u2019s research:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Discovery of new oil fields (in whole world) peaked in 1966<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>U.S. oil <em>production<\/em> peaked at 10 million barrels\/day in  1971.<\/li>\n<li>There are 42 gallons of oil in a standard barrel.<\/li>\n<li>U.S. burns about 25% of world\u2019s oil but produces less than 10% of  it.<\/li>\n<li>World oil production has hardly grown at all since 2005.<\/li>\n<li>In August 2008, oil prices <em>still <\/em>hit their record highs  despite Americans having driven 15 billion miles <em>fewer<\/em> than in  August 2007.<\/li>\n<li>Oil companies can barely get half the oil out of a well before  geophysics and economics make what\u2019s left not worth going after.<\/li>\n<li>U.S. oil <em>consumption<\/em> has increased from 15 million  barrels\/day in 1970 to 20 million barrels\/day in 2009.<\/li>\n<li>Oil consumption in Australia and New Zealand is up 63% and 74% since  1980.<\/li>\n<li>The Gulf of Mexico is the only place in the U.S. where oil  production has grown in the last 15-20 yrs.<\/li>\n<li>Underwater fields deplete twice as rapidly as conventional fields on  land.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Deepwater oil discovery peaked in 1996<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<blockquote>\n<h2><strong> \u201cThe oil that is  coming on line to replace the declining wells is dirty and hard to  find.\u00a0 It is unreliable and expensive. Like the change you desperately  look for in the pockets of pants you haven\u2019t worn for a while, a lot of  the oil we refine and burn these days is stuff we wouldn\u2019t even bother  with if we still had access to yesterday\u2019s oil fields.\u201d<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Rubin\u2019s general point, as I mentioned in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.getmoneyenergy.com\/2009\/07\/why-your-world-is-about-to-get-a-whole-lot-smaller-jeff-rubin-review\/\">review<\/a>,  is not one we haven\u2019t heard before<\/strong>.\u00a0 We\u2019re running out of oil;  <em>yes<\/em>, we are.\u00a0 It\u2019s not going to happen overnight, but by the  end of another 10 years we\u2019re going to see some painful pricing and  tough choices in regard to our food and travel choices.\u00a0 What Rubin does  is bring all the facts together to create a shocking picture that  allows you to see ahead 20 to 40 to 60 years from now.<\/p>\n<p>It makes me reconsider the warnings of the somewhat extremist trends  analyst, <a onclick=\"javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(&#039;\/outbound\/article\/www.trendsresearch.com&#039;);\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trendsresearch.com\/\" class=\"broken_link\"><strong>Gerald  Celente<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 He studies all of this.\u00a0 His tracking programs  follow all of this data and merge it with other global trends such as <strong>declining  water supplies<\/strong> (for example, in countries like Saudi Arabia,  \u201cfresh water in underground aquifers is already down 50 percent from the  levels of the mid-1990s.\u201d).\u00a0 What I\u2019d like to be able to do is create  my own, less statistical picture on the basis of all of this and use it  to make my own plans and better decisions going ahead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>For example, after reading this book, I\u2019m not sure what I  should think about in terms of buying a car going forward<\/strong>.\u00a0  Rubin notes that even if we all had electric cars, at the current usage  and number of miles driven in America, we don\u2019t even have enough  electricity to power all the cars.\u00a0 And it\u2019s clear that gas prices are  going to get much worse.\u00a0 Is the best we can do to hope that our  governments invest in better, more efficient public transit?\u00a0 Let\u2019s hope  that\u2019s what the Obama administration moves towards, rather than  building more and better roads \u2013 because it sounds like there are going  to be less and less people driving those roads.<\/p>\n<p>[Via <a href=\"http:\/\/www.getmoneyenergy.com\/2009\/07\/10-fast-facts-about-declining-world-oil-supply\/\" class=\"broken_link\">Getmoneyenergy.com<\/a>]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You\u2019ve heard of peak oil theory and have a vague idea of what it is, and you know much of the world economy runs on oil, but how specific is your knowledge?\u00a0 If you invest in individual oil stocks\/trusts as I do, you\u2019ll want to know as much as you can about the oil industry.\u00a0 [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[195],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-2051","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-news"],"amp_enabled":true,"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.survival-spot.com\/survival-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2051","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.survival-spot.com\/survival-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.survival-spot.com\/survival-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.survival-spot.com\/survival-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.survival-spot.com\/survival-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=2051"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.survival-spot.com\/survival-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/2051\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.survival-spot.com\/survival-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=2051"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.survival-spot.com\/survival-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=2051"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.survival-spot.com\/survival-blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=2051"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
