I would like to add that my research, (and trials folowed up with a microposcopic examination of the results), tell me that pool filter sand or childrens sand-box sand is a better filter than "dirt". Since it has been chlorinated or bromated throught its life, it has less 'critters' than the earth as mother nature makes it. Every neighborhood has a pool, but if you are way out there (in the woods), drop a couple of bags of pool filter sand in your basement. It's cheap.
